False Spring? Real Spring?

Our winter has been really warm! In fact we have just experienced the warmest February on record in the Chicago area. In years past we would experience short warm periods during February and March and have hope that spring was finally here. But those warm spells were considered false spring because we were certain to have ongoing below freezing temperatures and experience more snow at least through March and maybe into April. This year is different and nature agrees. With the many 60 degree days we have enjoyed the last several weeks, the trees and shrubs have responded with buds swelling and leaves opening. The native pussy willow tree (Salix discolor) in the backyard is in full bloom with many small native bees buzzy around. On Tuesday this week when our temperatures approached 70 degrees, I saw a brown belted bumble bee queen (Bombus griseocollis). The mated queens emerge in early spring to begin searching for a nesting site. Although we may have a few below freezing temperatures in the weeks ahead it appears nature is telling us that real spring has arrived! Enjoy!
