The Winter Garden

A native garden has a quiet beauty in winter. This time of cold, snow and rest is so important for the plants and critters that live in the garden. Many native plants require the freezing and thawing throughout the winter in order for seeds to break dormancy in the spring. Our native bees, butterflies and insects sleep as they await longer days and warmer temperatures to emerge for a new season of pollinating and recreating life for future generations. When the ground is frozen and the stems are gray and brown, it is also the perfect time to start planning and dreaming for the season ahead. Winter has just begun.

There is still time to scatter native seeds on the ground or to winter sow new plant species in containers. See my post “Tis the Season for Winter Sowing” on December 27, 2022 for simple steps for winter sowing.  I still have lots of native seeds to share. If you are searching for some seeds to winter sow, frost sow and snow sow.  Email me at prairieplantrevival@gmail.com.
